Tropical Travel Skincare Tips
My makeup usage has declined rapidly since I started
working from home which I attribute to the very noticeable improvement in my skin. Additionally since I turned 30, I've become super obsessed with skincare as one tends to do when they get older. The combination has me going full on Alicia Keys on a daily basis, even when I'm out in public or on vacation. Yes, I still wear makeup for shoots and special events but 75% of the week I am makeup free and I LOVE it.
I've also become a little cray about my travel skincare routine to ensure I keep breakouts at bay. I swear planes = breakouts. Add on super humid, sweaty days in a
tropical place and my face is typically screaming to me WTF! Well, I managed to spend 5 days in
Playa Del Carmen +
Tulum with 4 different plane rides round trip and came back with almost better skin then I left with. YASS!!! And you guys, I drank all the Margaritas. Literally alll of them.
So what was the special skincare recipe? A combination of peels, masks, micellar water, sunscreen, minimal/no makeup, and my go-to
night time products. Sounds daunting but I promise it was easy peasy to pack and totally worth it! Here's what I brought:
1. Garnier Micellar Water (travel size): could not be happier that Garnier finally made my fave micellar water in travel size. It acts as a makeup remover and cleanser in one and is literally a product I use every day of my life. It's especially good for those non-makeup days when you know you need to "cleanse" your face but don't feel it necessary to dive into your daily cleanser. In Mexico I used every time we got back from the beach to refresh my skin and in the AM.
2. Dr. Dennis Gross Peel: this is a super easy (and travel friendly) peel that has exfoliating alpha and beta hydroxy acids that I used every other night to keep a radiant glow and get all the dead skin cells off.
3. Kopari Mini Melt: I fell in love with Kopari products on my recent trip. The coconut products are SO perfect for post-sun skin. I've had bad experiences with coconut oil on my face, so I kept this only to my body, but was very happy with the results.
4. Garnier SkinActive Masks: instead of slapping on tons of moisturizer after a long day in the sun, Taye and I opted for these hydrating masks. They are super refreshing and moisturizing and don't leave a residue.
5. Garnier Anti-Puff Rollers: my morning routine everyday included this anti-puff roller which kept me looking fresh all day even when I wore zero makeup.
6. Clinique Mineral Face Sunscreen: another daily must! This is honestly the only face sunscreen I've used that doesn't make me breakout and doesn't leave a gross feeling.
7. All. The. Kiehls: I'm all about my Kiehls nighttime regimen (see my face faves) and I always re-order my products when they have their super-sized sample promos. Those samples become my Kiehls travel arsenal. #cantlivewithout
The fact that I came home and was a) not already broken out and b) didn't break out a few days later is a miracle for me. I've become so accustomed to post-travel breakouts that I just expect them, but the cleansing, exfoliating, moisturizing, protecting, minimal makeup combo proved to work miracles! What's also interesting is that we ate a lot of fresh fish during the trip, so maybe my diet helped too? I figured the excessive margaritas would counteract the food but who knows!
